About Lecture - JG-02 - History, Polity and Ethos of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for Laity

by Jerry Gladson

This section will provide public information about this course. For complete information, be sure to see all of the pages listed in the sidebar on the right side of the page.

A Church History Course for the Laity

This course is intended for the laity who would like to learn more about the history and polity of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This is a self-paced self-study course consisting of over eight hours of video-on-demand lectures organized into eleven lessons. Each lesson also contains optional readings and points for discussion for small groups or within our online Class Forum. The readings and discussions are optional but are highly recommended for students to get the most out of the lessons.

A Low Price To Make The Course Accessible

We have made a special pricing of this course for $39.95 in order to make this course accessible to as many people as possible. Despite the low price, the course contains seminary-level scholarship from a highly-respected professor.

Self-Paced Course for Individuals and Small Groups

This course contains eleven complete lessons containing over eight hours of on-demand videos, optional readings and discussion points. The course is ideal of new members of the church or small group studies.

The course will begin upon enrollment, and each student will be provided 150 days of online access to the Virtual Classroom.  Typically, students will complete one lesson per week for eleven weeks. The course usually requires about 75-90 days to complete.

Non-Credit Course

The lecture is a non-credit course; no grades will be issued, or certifications awarded. As such, this course does NOT meet the requirements for those seeking standing in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and require a history and polity course for standing or ordination. For those seeking standing, a sister course, "JG-01," is available that DOES include grading and certification. If interested in the graded  for-credit course, please see "JG-01 - The History, Polity and Ethos of the Christian Church (Disciple of Christ)." The JG-01 is considerably more expensive, but it includes significant direct interaction with Dr. Gladson, assessment of the student work produced, grading as well as institutional credit from Christian College. However, the same course materials (videos, documents and discussion points) are the same for both JG-02 and JG-01. By making JG-02 available at a low price for the laity, individuals and small groups can have access to seminary quality self-study materials for their continuing adult education.

By Dr. Jerry Gladson

jerry_gladson_photo_200w.jpgFor more than a decade, Dr. Jerry Gladson has prepared and taught a foundational course for all those who enter ministry in Georgia: The Disciples of Christ -- History, Polity and Ethos. Dr. Gladson has offered this course, through Christian College, for those who were enrolled in the Institute for Christian Ministry and for Seminarians enrolled in five graduate theological seminaries in the Greater Atlanta Area. Many who have transferred their standing to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) through the Region of Georgia have also completed this course.

When Jerry last taught this course at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, the Seminarians who were enrolled were included in a film project, under the direction of Mr. Buddy Ray (Georgia Disciples Webmaster and Professor at Georgia State University). Buddy filmed and edited each course, giving careful attention to the handouts for the course, the power-point presentations, and the other supplementary materials. Now, thanks to Buddy’s efforts, Jerry’s expertise, and the addition of interactive distance learning features provided by the TransformingTheChurch.org system, the course will once again be available for online completion.
