The Disciples of Christ -- History, Polity and Ethos

jerry_gladson_240w.pngThis twelve-lesson course is taught by Rev. Dr. Jerry Gladson and explores the history and polity of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) from its origins in the early 1800s to the present. Emphasis focuses on the pioneer founders of the denomination, Thomas and Alexander Campbell, Barton Stone, and Walter Scott, and their influence on the movement that emerged out of their efforts. The growth of the denomination will be viewed in the context of national and international history as it grew to take its place among the established, mainstream churches of modern times. Attention will also be given to the Restructure of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) that has shaped its modern identity, polity, ethos, and mission.

Taught by Dr. Jerry Gladson.

The next class will begin May 21, 2017.

  • Optional early registration for the Summer Term class that begins May 21st will open on March 23, 2017. You may register early is you wish.
  • All students who wish to participate in the Summer Term must be registered no later than May 22, 2017.
  • Upon any early registrations, people registering early will be placed into a temporary holding area featuring preliminary "getting-started" information.
  • People who register early will gain full entry into the JG-01 Virtual Classroom enter the virtual classroom during the week of April 10, 2017 for those who wish to get a head start on beginning the video and class reading portion of the course work. Dr. Gladson would join into the Virtual Classroom on May 21, 2017 to begin the interactive part of the class.
  • People who register after the opening of full access to the Virtual Classroom during the week of April 10, 2017 will gain full access immediately upon completion of their registration.
  • The way Dr. Gladson teaches the course puts an emphasis on systematically working together in joint participation in the online class discussion assignments in the Class Forum beginning on May 21. Working together, the class will complete one lesson per week for the eleven weeks of the Summer Term course.
  • Because the Summer Term is a bit shorter than the Fall and Winter terms, there will be NO late registration for the Summer Term because late registration would put students behind the important joint participation in the online discussions of each lesson. Registration will close on 6 p.m. CDT on May 22, 2017.
